Divine Attributes

Unsurpassed as the creator is my Lord

Supreme owner in His choice is my Lord.

Of the awe-inspiring beings in existence

Most exalted of them all is my Lord.

Free from all demanding mortal needs is He

Obligation does He owe no one, my Lord.

Out of nothingness all entities He made

Such a cherishing provider is my Lord.

He's the maker who has fashioned all creation

Every utterance is deciphered by my Lord.

Neither parable nor model can describe Him

A rare quintessential fragrance is my Lord.

For each worldly and eternal restitution

The chief architect redresser is my Lord.

He's the reader of the unrecorded parchments

All the secrets lie uncovered to my Lord.

Every thing that is apparent or lies covert

Well aware of their existence is my Lord.

In His kingship does He have no other partners

Reigning monarch without cohorts is my Lord.

His sole oneness is not caused by any failure

Omnipotent in His oneness is my Lord.

Wayfarer's Refrain

GhazalSufi17th c.
اردو
English

Plant flowers so your field becomes a garden;

Not wounding thorns to lacerate your feet.

If you shoot barbs at others, heed this warning,

Those arrows may in your own path descend.

Nor dig deep ditches in a traveler's pathway

Perhaps, you may plunge into them by chance.

Each person that you view with dark resentment,

Your own image to baseness will transform.

All humans have in form the same likeness

One who torments someone else will be tormented.

If you overlook the shortcomings of others,

Everyone will your own blemishes ignore.

The discerning farmer plants not on the high ground

In humility your own meadow will thrive.

A fragmented vessel emanates no echo;

Through your discourse is your true nature exposed.

Tread the right path while the daylight is in progress;

For with sudden speed the thread of night begins.

Though your sins may be minuscule don't ignore them,

For they pile upon each other and increase.

Every hostile act exchange with righteous goodwill;

Each fruit tree bearing fruit is showered with stones.
